Welcome back to Term 3 Oak Class!
This term in English we will be studying "The Selfish Giant"
The Selfish Giant: Amazon.co.uk: Wilde, Oscar, Deacon, Alexis, Deacon, Alexis: 9780099475866: Books
A book filled with beautiful illustrations and life lessons for us to analyse and use as inspiration for lots of writing outcomes including:
  • A monologue from the Giant's point of view
  • A rhyming poem, imagining all the things we could do as a giant
  • A persuasive letter, asking the giant to open up his garden
  • A letter to Spring, asking her to return to our garden
  • A diary entry
  • A newspaper report
  • A recount

Our Author of the term is Hugh Lupton and we will be delving deep into his version of Homer's Odyssey "The Adventures Of Odysseus" in our guided reading lessons.

Adventures of Odysseus: Amazon.co.uk: Lupton, Hugh, Balit, Christina: 9781846864469: Books

This book tells the myths and legends surrounding one of Ancient Greece's many demi-gods Odysseus. It also, just so happens, to tie in brilliantly with our History topic...

In History this term we will be looking at the world of the Ancient Greeks

Lesson Plans of Ancient Greece: The Archaic Period

and asking the question "What did the Ancient Greeks Do For Us", where we will explore everything from their completely action-packed 'marvel-esque' creation story, all the way up to their society and democracy, and see how it still influences life today.

In Maths, we will begin with Ratio, using them to help us scale objects.

And then move onto (the dreaded, but actually really fun) Algebra! where numbers are hidden behind letters.
I bet you can solve these problems easy-peasy!...

In Geography, we will be exploring "Where Does Our Energy Come From?"
Where does our energy come from?
We will explore where we, in the UK, get our energy from and then compare it to other countries including the U.S, and look at how this has changed over the years.

In Art, we will be looking at the semi-abstract, pixelated portrait style of the legend Chuck Close

Chuck Close | White Cube

, and use his style to influence self-portraits. They are going to look AWESOME!

and move on to statistics.
In History, we will continue to explore what life was like during the Tudor times. We will use primary and secondary sources to make deductions about what really happened to one of Henry VIII's wives, if Henry was a good king or a tyrant, and find out if we can believe all sources from the past.
The Tudors!
In Geography, we continue to explore "Why population changes" and have a particular focus on climate change, it's causes and it's effects, and will be making posters explaining the factors that lead to it, and what we can do to help.

Homework will be the same this term as last. Children will be expected to take part in some Times Table Rockstars, Doodle, Spellings and Reading each week. How much of each will be considered when the homework is set. Please remember, you can always come and see us with any questions or extra help you might need with the work. We are also continuing to run our daily lunchtime Doodle Club to support all children across the school.
We look forward to seeing you all at Parents' Evening on the 11th November.
